SchoolTrade draws inspiration from a great truth: ` It takes a village to raise a child'

Fast Facts about SchoolTrade

SchoolTrade is fortunate to enjoy the full backing of the KZN MEC for Education as well as good relationships with the relevant education officials

SchoolTrade is actually an extensive network comprised of many members:

  • Business that sponsor schools to be part of the network and sometimes loan us their staff members
  • Needy schools that benefit greatly from being part of the network
  • Well resourced schools that contribute their skills and receive benefits
  • Friends of SchoolTrade who share their resources, such as, vehicles and skills

Three staff members who are responsible for all of the planning, record keeping and most of the teacher training

  • Colin McKay is an Educational Psychologist and the project manager of SchoolTrade
  • June Stockton is the office manager and responsible for much of the networking and record keeping
  • Vanessa McKay is a qualified pre-school teacher and responsible for supporting the pre-schools (or ECD centres) on the network. This programme is known as the Sekelo (isiZulu for foundation) programme
Currently the network is comprised of 18 sponsored schools and 12 supporting businesses.

An estimated ten thousand learners from grade R to grade 12, from Imbali to Bulwer benefit every day because some business has sponsored their school to be a member of SchoolTrade.

Schooltrade's own social investment project

SchoolTrade volunteers time through Vanessa and donates resources and funds to the Tabitha pre-school in Mayor's Walk. Our support has helped to transform the school into a vibrant educational center where orphaned and HIV + children are receiving a quality foundation phase education. The pre-school undertakes regular outings to places of interest in and around Pietermaritzburg. It also has plans to develop a psychomotor centre.
